Do I need a high-speed internet connection?

For the highest possible quality when streaming movies and TV shows, we recommend you connect your Roku® streaming player or Roku TV™ to a high-speed internet connection.

Roku streaming devices perform well with most home broadband services like DSL, fiber or cable internet. Movies and TV shows streamed in higher picture quality formats like 4K Ultra HD or 4K HDR require even higher internet speeds. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for details about the available services in your area.

  • Notes:
    • For specific requirements, check with your channel providers (e.g., Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, Sling TV).
    • We do not recommend using mobile hotspots considering they are generally not as reliable as home broadband.

Does my Roku device need to be permanently connected to the internet?

Roku streaming players are low-power devices that are designed to remain on and connected to the internet. A permanent internet connection is recommended.

A Roku TV can be used as a standard HDTV without the need for an internet connection. However, when you want to stream movies and TV shows, an internet connection is required.

Should I be concerned with bandwidth caps?

To stream movies and TV shows, your Roku device must download data from channel providers like Netflix and YouTube. If you plan to stream often, or you plan to stream higher picture quality content, your Roku device must download larger amounts of data. Some ISPs have a limit, or a bandwidth cap, on the amount of data you can download in a given period of time before you incur additional fees. Contact your ISP to understand any applicable bandwidth caps.

Should I be concerned about internet speeds when I travel with my Roku player?

Many travel destinations provide access to the internet, but some may limit the speed of the connection. A slow internet connection may cause video playback issues when streaming. We suggest you contact your destination before traveling and ask about the internet services they offer. Some locations offer a high-speed solution for a fee.
